SPOTSWOOD, NJ - There was a lot of fun and excitement at the Spotswood School District's Schoenly School for the 2025 Read Across America Week. Read Across America Week kicked off on Monday, March 3 and included an array of festivities at the preschool through first grade school. Schoenly School students had members of Spotswood High School's National Honor Society come by to read on March 3. Celebrated Career Day on March 4 by dressing up to showcase a professional they're interested in and having guest speakers from the Schoenly School family talk to students about their professions. More guest readers from the Spotswood School District came by to read their favorite books on Thursday and the week ended with Memorial Middle School eighth graders going into classrooms for some cool STEAM activities. Of course, Read Across America Week wouldn't be complete without an author visit.

On March 5, students had the special opportunity to read a new children's book, Mickey Has His Ups and Downs . The book is written by Sarah Traugut Gordon and illustrated by Helena Gordon Eisenberg. Traugut Gordon is a former New Jersey English teacher and librarian. Gordon Eisenberg is a former preschool teacher.

Schoenly School students got the chance to hear the book, talk about Mickey's adventure and ask questions. They also got to experience the book through DJ Mickey's unique "Read-Mix" program. Read-Mix is an interactive and engaging program combining literacy, music and dancing. DJ Mickey often joins Traugut Gordon and Gordon Eisenberg on school and library visits as a way to help kids get motivated to read. Mickey Has His Ups and Downs is available online. Read Across America Week is always full of fun, energy and lots of awesome children's books. The National Education Association christened Read Across America Day on March 2, 1988. March 2 is Dr. Seuss' birthday. Their goal was to throw the biggest party to honor the joys of reading and center it around one of the most recognizable children's book authors of all time. Seuss published more than 60 books throughout his career. Many schools, like the district's Schoenly School, turned the one-day reading bonanza into a five-day reading extravaganza. Read Across America Week often includes a variety of activities showcasing the wonders of reading.
